Killer Graces (left) and Charm the Maker finished 1-2 in the Hollywood Starlet.
Killer Graces and Charm the Maker, the first two finishers in last December's Hollywood Starlet (gr. I), will both be making their turf debuts in the $150,000 Providencia Stakes (gr. IIIT) April 7 at Santa Anita Park.
Seven 3-year-old fillies are entered in the 1 1/8-mile Providencia, which is one of three graded stakes on the Santa Anita Derby program on Saturday. The Providencia is the eighth race on the card with a 3:30 p.m. PDT scheduled post.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Starlet winner Killer Graces switches to grass after finishing seventh in the Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) on Santa Anita's dirt track March 3. All three of her previous wins have come in stakes races over the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park.
In her only other start this year, the Kentucky-bred chestnut daughter of Congaree ran second to Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) winner Willa B Awesome in the Santa Ysabel Stakes (gr. III) Jan. 28 at Santa Anita. Owned by a partnership that includes Daniel Borislow, Gillian Campbell, and Steve Melen, Killer Graces will carry 123 pounds, five more than each of her rivals.
Rafael Bejarano has the mount on Killer Graces for the first time. The filly, breaking from post 3, has worked over the Santa Anita turf course, going five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 handily March 24. Killer Graces brings a 3-4-0 record in 10 lifetime starts into the race with earnings of $414,830 to lead the field.
Charm the Maker, trained by Ron McAnally for his wife Deborah, is certainly bred for the grass. She is by Empire Maker out of the Giant's Causeway mare Charm the Giant, who was a graded stakes winner on turf. The filly has hit a rough patch since her strong runner-up effort in the Starlet, in which she came up a half-length short. Since then, she ran fourth as the even-money pick in the Santa Ysabel and was last in the Las Virgenes.
Winner of the Sharp Cat Stakes on the Cushion Track prior to the Starlet, Charm the Maker has worked four times over the Santa Anita lawn since the Las Virgenes, including a three-furlong blowout in :35 4/5 April 5. Joel Rosario returns to ride.
Hronis Racing's Lady of Shamrock won the one-mile China Doll Stakes March 13 on grass by 1 1/2 lengths in closing style. The Scat Daddy filly gets four pounds off that effort, her third win in six races, for the Providencia. John Sadler trains Lady of Shamrock, who will be ridden by Mike Smith. Lady of Shamrock drew the rail.
Recent Irish import Indigo River, trained by Jeff Mullins for Michael House, finished third in the China Doll after setting a swift pace under pressure as the 2-1 favorite. The daughter of Kodiac won her first two United States starts on the Santa Anita hillside course at about 6 1/2 furlongs, including the Feb. 12 Sweet Life Stakes. Joe Talamo is aboard for the first time, replacing Rosario.
British arrivals Byrama and Island Paradise also merit consideration.
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Byrama, a filly by Byron to be ridden for the first time by Garrett Gomez, comes off an optional claiming victory on the hillside Feb. 26. Trained by Simon Callaghan, she debuted in the U.S. Dec. 30 with a third-place finish behind the victorious Lady of Shamrock in the Blue Norther Stakes.
Irish-bred Island Paradise won a restricted allowance at Kempton in her final start in England last September. In her only U.S. start, she ran third in the one-mile Miesque Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Hollywood Nov. 25. Paddy Gallagher now conditions Island Paradise, who will race without Lasix. David Flores takes the call.
