Team Valor International’s State of Play, winner of the With Anticipation (gr. IIT) last September at Saratoga and fresh off another stakes victory at Turfway Park, heads a field of seven 3-year-olds entered for the $100,000 Transylvania (gr. IIIT) on opening day at Keeneland April 6.
The 1 1/16-mile Transylvania serves as the feature race for the start of the 15-day spring meet that runs through April 27. The 10-race card begins at 1:05 p.m. EDT, with the Transylvania carded as the ninth race with a 5:13 p.m. post time.
Trained by Graham Motion, State of Play enters the Transylvania off a victory in the John Battaglia Memorial on Polytrack March 3. John Velazquez has the mount on State of Play, who will break from post 1 and carry 123 pounds.
State of Play, a son of War Front , out of the Procida mare Valeta, was a bargain $13,000 purchase at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. He was bred in Kentucky by Stone Farm and Del Hancock.
Another colt that figures to attract interest is Fletcher and Carolyn Gray’s homebred colt Icon Ike. Trained by Larry Jones, the son of Yes It's True is undefeated in three starts on the grass, including the March 10 Black Gold Stakes at Fair Grounds. In that race he defeated Hero of Order , who came back to win the April 1 Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at 109-1. In Icon Ike’s sole start at Keeneland, he finished a solid third in a maiden event on Polytrack.
Miguel Mena has the mount on Icon Ike, who will break from post position seven and carry 118 pounds.
