John Ward Jr., recently hired as executive director of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, has asked to begin his new job April 16, not April 1 as previously announced.
Ward asked Public Protection Cabinet Secretary Robert Vance to approve the delay. According to a March 28 e-mail from the cabinet, Ward said he is “still working to comply with the Executive Branch Ethics Commission opinion regarding the divestiture of his business relationships.”
Ward, a Kentucky-based trainer, had asked the ethics panel for an opinion on whether his accepting the KHRC job is a conflict of interest. He was cleared but the commission during a hearing outlined standards for Ward and his wife, Donna, also a trainer, to follow.
