Gulfstream Park jockeys Paco Lopez and Antonio Gallardo were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital on the evening of March 17 after both were involved in a spill in the 11th race, the track reported.
Lopez, Gallardo, and jockey Luis Jurado were involved in the accident at the top of the stretch in the 7 ½-furlong turf event. Jurado walked off the course and back to the jockey’s room under his own power.
Lopez, Gulfstream’s leading rider last season, and Gallardo, who’s ridden four winners from 70 mounts, were both conscious and moving their extremities as they were taken to Memorial Regional for further observation.
The riders' three horses – Morediamondsplease, Miracle At Sea, and Little Bailey – were not injured, according to the track's initial report.
Little Bailey and Lopez raced toward the rear of the pack along the inside when she clipped heels with Corinthian Leather in the stretch and fell. Morediamondsplease, ridden by Jurado, and Miracle At Sea, with Gallardo aboard, each struck the fallen horse and lost their riders as they also went down.
