Online Auction to Benefit Rescued Horses

The R.A.C.E. Fund, non-profit organization established in 2004, will launch its spring fund drive with an online auction on eBay starting March 24 to help raise funds for racehorse retirement and rescue from slaughter.

The auction proceeds will also benefit Promethia, a 30-year-old mare by Alydar and her former companion, a 21-year-old Quarter Horse named Buddy-Tiger. Both horses were rescued last May by the R.A.C.E. Fund and by several people around the country who donated funds for their care. Promethia was under weight and was suffering a severe eye infection. Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington donated their services and performed the necessary surgery to remove her eye.
“We believe Promethia may be one of the oldest living descendants by Alydar,” stated Marlene Murray, president of the R.A.C.E. Fund, in a release.
Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, who trained Alysheba, (also by Alydar), is donating autographed pictures of Alysheba winning the 1987 Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Also, David Wells, the trainer of Rapid Redux, winner of 22 consecutive races and recipient of an Eclipse Award and the Secretariat Vox Populi Award, has donated several autographed win pictures and horseshoes worn by Rapid Redux.
“We are very grateful that Jack Van Berg and David Wells have donated these valuable and historic racing items to help us raise funds for Promethia and Buddy-Tiger and to help other horses in need,” said Murray.
In addition, there will be other exciting racing and non racing items available to bid on. in coming weeks Items will be listed one at a time starting March 24 on eBay for a limited bidding period per item.
