Kutub and Hatha Anna gave Godolphin two stakes wins Saturday, with the former winning the New Zealand Bloodstock Singapore Gold Cup in Singapore and the latter annexing the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Aus-II) at Flemington in Australia.
Kutub (In the Wings--Minnie Habit, by Habitat) ran the 1 3/8-mile Singapore Gold Cup in 2:15.10 and finished three lengths clear of Saddle Up, with Bocelli third, and Tapildo fourth in the 16-horse field.
The win marks the fifth in 12 starts for the 4-year-old colt and third in six starts this season. Kutub entered the Gold Cup following a four-length win over Yavana's Pace win in the Preis von Europa (Ger-I). The Exors of Mrs E.M. Burke and Airlie Stud bred him in Ireland.
"This is our biggest victory in Singapore and Hatha Anna gave us our first winner in Australia earlier today -- it has been a great day for Godolphin," said Saeed bin Suroor, winning trainer for both horses. "Kutub is a good horse and has improved a lot this year. Mentally and physically he is stronger than before."
Kutub may race next in the Hong Kong Vase (HK-I, Dec.16), according to a report on the stable's Web site.
Hatha Anna was shipped to Australia primarily to serve as a work mate for Godolphin's Melbourne Cup entrants. On Saturday, Hatha Anna earned his first stakes win while giving Godolphin their first Australian winner.
"Hatha Anna is tough, he's fresh and well and that makes all the difference," said Godolphin's Tony Howarth. "He came over here as company for the other two horses but he is a consistent horse at home. I thought he'd come on from what he's done in England and was confident he would finish in the first three."
Hatha Anna completed the 1 9/16 miles on good turf a long head in front of Ascana, with Tiger's Eye third.
Patrick Payne piloted 4-year-old Hatha Anna (Sadler's Wells--Moon Cactus, by Kris) to his third career victory from nine starts. Frankie Dettori was in the irons for Kutub's victory.
