Leading Fair Grounds jockey Rosie Napravnik completed a five-win day when she guided Gainesway Thoroughbreds’ odds-on favorite Small Kitchen to victory in the $49,000 feature at the New Orleans track March 4.
Attempting to tie the track record of six victories on a single card in the day's nightcap, Napravnik came up a neck short aboard Pink Pony South, who closed three lengths in the final furlong but finished second to 62-1 shot Wedding Slippers.
Napravnik scored with Hello Sailor ($18.80) in the third race, Baby Afleet ($6.40) in the fourth, Herbal Prospector ($7.80) in the fifth, Caroline's Cutie ($10.40) in the seventh, and Small Kitchen ($3.60) in the ninth.
The record of six wins in a day is held by several riders over the track's 140-year history.
Small Kitchen’s margin of victory at the wire was 7 1/4 lengths in the allowance optional claiming affair that was restricted to sophomore fillies and contested at six furlongs on the main track. Michael Maker trains the winning homebred daughter of Corinthian for Gainesway.
The winning time was 1:09.88 for the front-running Small Kitchen.
Napravnik is the runaway leader in the jockey standings at Fair Grounds with 88 victories. James Graham is next with 65.
