Kaleem Shah’s Fed Biz and Arnold Zetcher’s Liaison each worked a sharp six furlongs at Santa Anita Feb. 29 for trainer Bob Baffert in preparation for the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II).
Fed Biz, who has won his last two starts impressively, worked his six panels in 1:13 2/5, the third fastest of 12 works at the distance, while Liaison, who will try to rebound from a disappointing effort in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II), covered the distance in 1:13 4/5.
The fastest six-furlong work of the morning went to the maiden Brother Francis, who worked in 1:12 flat. The son of Lion Heart has placed in the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) and Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III). He was scratched out of a maiden race on grass last month, but could also show up in the San Felipe.
Fed Biz has emerged as Baffert’s main Derby threat off his dominating victory in a one-mile allowance race last time out. But Liaison, who was rank early in the Lewis and wound up stumbling and throwing his rider in the stretch, has been working long distances and could be much more relaxed in the San Felipe.
