Fastnet Rock Colt Sets Pace at Melbourne Sale
A Fastnet Rock colt became the highest-priced horse sold so far at William Inglis & Son’s Melbourne premier yearling sale, commanding Aust$500,000 ($534,930 in U.S. funds) during the second session of the auction Feb. 28 in Australia. James Bester Bloodstock and Coolmore Stud buying team member Demi O’Byrne purchased the bay yearling from Musk Creek.
The colt is a half brother to the winner Flying Empress (by Fusaichi Pegausus). Their dam, Bellevue Lady (by Zabeel), finished second once and third four times during her nine career races. The mare is a full sister to the winner Limoncino and a half sister to three other winners, including Mango Daiquiri (by Cape Cross), who finished third in the Qantas Wakeful Stakes (Aust-II).
A Fastnet Rock – So Funny colt was the second-highest-priced horse sold during the second session. BC3 Thoroughbreds and David Hayes Racing bought the yearling for Aust$340,000 ($363,752) from Rheinwood Pastoral.
During the auction’s opening session, a Fastnet Rock–Scenario filly was the most expensive yearling sold, bringing Aust$300,000 ($320,670 in U.S. funds).
The results for the second session included a gross of Aust$11,105,500 ($11,881,300) for the 145 yearlings that were sold. The average price was Aust$76,590 ($81,941) and the median price was Aust$65,000 ($69,541). Compared to last year’s second session, when 138 horses were sold, the gross and average rose 6.6% and 1.5%, respectively. The median increased 8.3%.
The clearance rate was 80.1%, down from 82.6% in 2011.
“To clear 80% of the yearlings offered today at a very handsome average is a great result for our vendors,” said Inglis Melbourne director Peter Heagney.
The results for the auction’s first two sessions combined included a gross Aust$21,459,000 ($22,958,100) for the 287 yearlings that were sold. The average was Aust$74,770 ($79,993) and the median was Aust$65,000 ($69,541). The clearance rate was 79.7%.
“There has been a great buzz around the sale the past few days, with a strong group of new and existing buyers all being rewarded with some fantastic types,” Heagney said.
