Lantern Hill Farm’s Motor City, winner of last year’s Iroquois Stakes (gr. III), worked five furlongs at Palm Meadows Training Center the morning of Feb. 23. The son of Street Sense —Shawgatny, by Danzig Connection, was clocked in 1:01.88, the fourth fastest of 13 at the distance.
Trainer Ian Wilkes gave Motor City plenty of time off from his last start in late November, and the move marked the fourth recorded workout at Palm Meadows for Motor City this month. On Feb. 6 Motor City went four furlongs in :49.88, then followed that with five furlongs in 1:02.42 Feb. 12 and a half-mile in :51.12 Feb. 18.
Last year Motor City broke his maiden at second asking at Ellis Park in mid-August, then ran third behind Shared Property and Take Charge Indy in the one-mile Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. III) and ran eighth on Keeneland’s Polytrack in the Dixiana Breeder’s Futurity (gr. I) Oct. 8. He then won the one-mile Iroquois while rallying from seventh. All off his races came with Calvin Borel aboard.
The bullet move at five furlongs on the day, 1:00.30, was put in by 4-year-old Dialed In . Robert LaPenta’s son of Mineshaft has not started since finishing fourth in the May 21 Preakness Stakes (gr. I). The winner of last year’s Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) and Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park, Dialed In finished eighth in Animal Kingdom’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) as the 5-1 favorite.
Dialed In fired a bullet four-furlong move of :47.30 Feb. 13 for Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito.
Also working five furlongs at Palm Meadows was the Todd Pletcher-trained Joe Vann, winner of last year’s TVG Illinois Derby (gr. III). The 4-year-old traveled the distance in 1:02.02. Zayat Stables’ son of Silver Deputy hasn’t faced the starter since last Labor Day when he ran eighth behind Wilburn in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx Racing.
