At Bay Meadows Sunday, Irish-bred Blue Steller closed from last to win the $100,000 Bay Meadows Derby Handicap by 1 1/2 lengths. Under Alex Solis, the 7-10 favorite toted high weight of 119 pounds around the firm turf course to complete the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.81.
Sir Alfred finished second, just ahead of Sea to See, who set the early pace. Irish Warrior, Ice Prince, Hoovergetthekeys, Top Hit, and Echelon completed the order of finish.
Blue Steller (Barathea--Banque Privee, by Private Account) raced in France for his first five career races -- including two fourth-place performances in group stakes and a runner-up finish in the Prix de Suresnes -- before earning his first career win in his first North American start in late July for trainer Bobby Frankel. He then finished third in the Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) prior to Sunday's victory, for which he earned $55,000 for Amerman Racing Stables.
Blue Steller returned $3.40, $2.80, and $2.10 and led a $1 exacta worth $10.30. Sir Alfred paid $8.20 and $2.10, with Sea to See paying $2.10 to show. (Chart, Equibase
