Galic Boy, 24-1, Upsets Where's Taylor at Hawthorne

Galic Boy, the Hawthorne course-record holder at about 1 1/16 miles on turf, upset 13-10 favorite Where's Taylor to earn his first career graded stakes win in Saturday's $150,000 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap (gr. IIIT) at the Chicago-area track. Under veteran rider Ray Sibille, Galic Boy rallied from fourth-place to catch the pacesetting favorite in the stretch en route to a 1 1/4-length victory over that rival.

Good Journey finished third, a neck behind Where's Taylor. Yankee Brass came home another 1 1/2 lengths back, followed by Promise of War, Beckon the King, Langston, Conserve, A'fire, and Jake the Flake.

Galic Boy completed the mile in 1:35.10 on firm turf and returned $50.60, $15.60, and $7.40. The winning exacta combination paid $149.60.

Galic Boy earned $90,000 for the win, his 10th in 31 starts and third in six starts this year. Galic Boy (Irish River--Milaoshu, by Fappiano) is trained by Mickey A. Goldfine and is owned by his breeder, Arthur I. Appleton. The Florida-bred has twice won the John Henry Stakes and also earned a one-length win in the Overage Stakes in the course-record setting performance. (Chart, Equibase)
