Probable 2011 Canadian champion 2-year-old male Maritimer has been sold but the owner is apparently not controversial Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov.

A story published on BloodHorse.com Jan. 23 quoted one by the Toronto Star that identified Maritimer’s buyer as Kadyrov. An anonymous source close to the deal said Kadyrov was not the buyer and the $1.7 million price previously reported by the Star also was “inaccurate.”

Louisville attorney Joel Turner, representing owner/breeder Howard Walton in the sale, was contacted by BloodHorse.com to clear up what has been reported about the deal but Turner could only confirm that the horse had been sold.

Apparently Maritimer will now be trained by Seth Benzel and pointed toward the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine and the $2 million UAE Derby (UAE-II).

Maritimer, a son of Stormy Atlantic  , is the probable early favorite for the Queen's Plate, which is restricted to Canadian-bred horses.

Formerly trained by Sid Attard, Maritimer owns a career record of 3-2-0 from six starts and earnings of $357,041. Major victories came in last year’s Coronation Futurity and Display Stakes, both at Woodbine.
