Vinery has signed a deal to buy a percentage of graded stakes winners Trippi and More Than Ready and to stand them at stud at the end of their racing careers. Trippi, the End Sweep colt who races for Dogwood Stable, is scheduled to run through his 4-year-old year of 2001. More Than Ready's departure to stud is "up in the air" (either in 2001 or 2002), according to Vinery general manager Bates Newton. The deal does not make Vinery a partner in racing earnings or racing management of the horses.
"They're both very important horses, especially for Vinery, with high quality and speed," said Newton. "There are very few horses around of this caliber you can make a deal on."
A multiple grade III winner in Florida this spring, Trippi displayed classic potential by winning his first four career starts. After finishing unplaced in the Kentucky Derby, Trippi was dropped back to sprints distances, where he has flourished. After winning the Riva Ridge Stakes (gr. II)), Trippi defeated older horses in the Tom Fool (gr. II). He is expected to make his next start in the King’s Bishop (gr. I) at Saratoga on Aug. 26.
“We are overjoyed at this opportunity to be connected with an operation such as Vinery,” said Dogwood president Cot Campbell.
While the fee for neither horse has been determined, Newton said Vinery is looking for horses to stand in the $15,000 to $30,000 range. Newton said the deal was completed last week Trippi ran third in the Amsterdam Stakes (gr. III) and before More Than Ready's fourth-place effort in the Haskell Invitational (gr. I). A son of Southern Halo, More Than Ready is campaigned by James T. Scatuorchio.
