Include Me Out wins the La Canada Stakes.

Making her first start around two turns, longshot Include Me Out registered a convincing 4 1/4-length victory in the $150,000 La Canada Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Jan. 22 (VIDEO).

Joe Talamo, shaking a severe slump during the first month of the Santa Anita season, guided Include Me Out to her first stakes victory at odds of 8-1 for trainer Ron Ellis and Samantha Siegel's Jay Em Ess Stable.

Taking control leaving the far turn while racing wide, Include Me Out powered away from her rivals in upper stretch and cruised to victory over Great Hot. Tiz Flirtatious, the 17-10 favorite in the field of six 4-year-old fillies, finished third.

The final time for the 1 1/16-mile event was 1:41.89.

Kentucky's Brereton C. Jones bred the winner, a daughter of Include   out of the Mazel Trick mare Don't Trick Her that sold for $150,000 at Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky July 2009 sale. The fast developing dark bay/brown filly was coming off a fifth-place finish in the seven-furlong La Brea (gr. I) in her stakes debut Dec. 31.

“She got in behind horses (in the La Brea) but I think being by Include she was dying to go two turns and it’s kind of been a process getting her up to it," Ellis said. "She fired today, that’s for sure."

Two scratches reduced the La Canada field to six. Include Me Out was settled near the back of the compact field as May Day Rose, breaking from the rail, jumped to the lead and set a fast clip (:22.64, :45.86, 1:10.12) through the far turn turn.

May Day Rose was in command over Great Hot and Tiz Flirtatious rounding the final bend but had little left as Include Me Out challenged. Include Me Out surged to the front leaving the turn, drew off by 2 1/2 lengths at mid-stretch, and continued to pour it on late under left-handed urging from Talamo.

Talamo said Include Me Out was forced to ease back early but “after that she just ran great. She was so fresh and ready today, and full of run.”

Great Hot, who gave vain chase through the lane for Chantal Sutherland, held on for second gamely by three-quarters of a length over Tiz Flirtatious and Joel Rosario.

"The distance was fine today, but she was too aggressive early," Rosario said of the favorite. "I tried to get her to relax, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. Maybe she’ll be better next time.”

Include Me Out won a six-furlong optional claiming event at Santa Anita by 3 1/2 lengths last November. The La Canada victory improved her career mark to 3-2-0 in seven races with earnings of $183,600.

Under equal weights of 118 pounds, Include Me Out paid $19, $6.40, $3.40 as the second-longest shot in the field. The Brazilian-bred filly Great Hot, third in the La Brea for trainer A.C. Avila, returned $3.60 and $2.40. They combined for a $57.80 exacta. Tiz Flirtatious, losing for the first time in four starts, paid $2.60 to show.

Love Theway Youare finished fourth, followed by Capital Plan and May Day Rose.
