The Commissioner's Cup, to be awarded Friday during the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Western Conference on Racing, will go to the family of Dr. Jack Robbins. The family will be honored at the conference to be held at Santa Anita Park on the eve of the Cal Cup.
The Commissioner's Cup honors and individual or group for extraordinary contributions to the NTRA and the Thoroughbred industry. Previous recipients are recipients include R.D. Hubbard (2000), Ken Maddy (1999), and Clement L. Hirsch (1998).
Robbins; his wife, Margaret; and their four sons -- Jay, Tom, Don and
David -- will receive the award. Jay Robbins is the trainer of Tiznow, winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic the past two years.
"Jack Robbins has been a key supporter during the NTRA's creation and development, and his family's contributions -- whether on the racetrack, in executive offices, or in the legal realm -- offer further evidence of why this extraordinary family was chosen for this award," NTRA commissioner Tim Smith said. "Imagine the horseracing industry and, in particular, the California racing industry without the contribution of the Robbins family."
"All the directors of Oak Tree Racing Association are pleased that Dr. Robbins, our president; his wife; and four sons have been honored for their contributions to the betterment of the sport of horse racing for so many years, and in so many and varied capacities," said Sherwood Chillingworth, executive vice president of the Oak Tree Racing Association. "They are one of the first families of the California community of horsemen, and we are delighted that they have been so recognized by this award."
