Ice Box , a grade I winner and second in the 2010 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), has been retired from racing to stand at Calumet Farm near Lexington. His fee is $7,500 live foal stands and nurses.
Ice Box won the 2010 Florida Derby (gr. I) in his first start against grade I company and was wheeled right back in the Kentucky Derby. In a 20-horse Kentucky Derby field, he rallied from 19th to finish a neck in front of Paddy O'Prado , with champion Lookin At Lucky finishing sixth.
During his career, Ice Box won or placed in five of 16 races and earned $948,068 for owner Robert V. LaPenta while trained by Nick Zito. In what was his final start, Ice Box finished eighth in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) but was beaten only four lengths.
A 5-year-old son of Pulpit , Ice Box is out of the grade II-winning Tabasco Cat mare Spice Island, whose dam, Crown of Sheba, is a half sister to Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck.
