Graded stakes winner Chocolate Candy, who was retired from racing this fall to stand at Bar None Ranches near Dewinton, Alberta, Canada, died of complications following a paddock accident at the farm. The 5-year-old son of Candy Ride was scheduled to stand for $2,500 (Canadian funds).
Bred by Sid and Jenny Craig, Chocolate Candy won the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) and two other stakes for the Craig Family Trust. He placed in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) and was fifth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), won by Mine That Bird. During his career, Chocolate Candy won or placed in eight races from 21 starts and earned $632,205.
Chocolate Candy was produced from the stakes-winning Seattle Slew mare Crownette.
