Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Dialed In , on the sidelines since the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) in May, is back in serious training for Nick Zito at Palm Meadows.
Robert LaPenta’s 3-year-old colt breezed three furlongs in :36 flat at Palm Meadows Dec. 13 as he nears the 2012 season for Zito. The trainer has not determined a specific plan for Dialed In, although he indicated that the son of Mineshaft could make a return to competition late in the Gulfstream Park meet.
Dialed In's latest work was his first recorded drill since June at Saratoga when he went an easy half-mile. He subsequently was found to have chip in his right knee and had surgery in late June.
After a thrilling neck victory over Shackleford in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream April 3, Dialed In left South Florida last spring as a leading candidate for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
Sent off the lukewarm favorite at 5-to-1 in the 137th ‘Run for the Roses’ at Churchill Downs May 7, the late-running Dialed In encountered plenty of trouble while finishing eighth in the bulky field of 19. He had another less than smooth trip in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico two weeks later, finishing fourth behind wire-to-wire winner Shackleford.
Out of the Storm Cat mare Miss Doolittle, Dialed In also win the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream. He is 3-1-0 from six starts with earnings of $939,206.
