Lady Cara, a 3-year-old winning daughter of Prized, brought the top price of $42,000 at the Barretts October mixed sale in Southern California on Monday. She was purchased by StanleyFulton from Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent for J.Z. Stock Farm.

Produced from the winning Naskra mare Lady Hatchet, Lady Cara is a half-sister to stakes-placed Banquo, Emeraldforalady, and Lord Emerald. Lady Cara has won two of her nine career starts and has earned $40,200. In her most recent effort, she finished third in an allowance race on Oct. 10 at Bay Meadows.

Barretts reported that 180 horses were sold during the first session for a gross of $887,900, an average of $4,933, and a median of $3,250. All those figures were down from the comparable session in 2000. The buy-back rate was 17.8%, with 39 of the 219 head offered failing to find new homes. During last year's first session, the 189 horses sold grossed $1,045,800 and averaged $5,533. The median was $3,300.

The second and final session of the Barretts sale is scheduled for Tuesday.
