Kentucky racing shifts to Turfway Park for four months beginning Dec. 1, opening night of the holiday meet.
The December session will feature the traditional five stakes, each valued at $50,000: the Holiday Inaugural at six furlongs for fillies and mares Dec. 3; the My Charmer at 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares Dec. 10; the Prairie Bayou at 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-olds and up Dec. 17; the Gowell at six furlongs for 2-year-old fillies Dec. 23; and the Holiday Cheer at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up Dec. 31.
All but the Gowell will be run on Saturdays. The track is closed Saturday, Dec. 24, for Christmas Eve, so the Gowell will be run on a Friday night.
Live racing on the Polytrack will be held Thursdays through Sundays. First post time Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays is 5:30 p.m. EST, and at 1:10 p.m. Sundays. There are holiday exceptions.
Racing will be held at 1:10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, through Wednesday, Dec. 28. The Thursday, Dec. 29, and Friday, Dec. 30, programs will be held at 1:10 p.m. as well. The New Year’s Eve card gets under way at the regular 5:30 p.m. post.
Purses will remain steady for the holiday meet, with $20,000 maiden special weight events and open $5,000 claimers racing for $9,000.
The winter/spring meet begins Jan. 1 and extends through April 1. Racing will be held four days a week in January, and three days a week in February and March; traditionally more horses have been available in January than the other two months.
