New York Breeder/Owner Marcus Vogel Dies

Marcus Vogel, who raced New York graded stakes winner Its Acedemic, died earlier this month in New Rochelle, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, Scottie.

Its Acedemic, who was bred by the couple, won or placed in 11 graded stakes, all in New York. He captured five stakes including the 1989 Stuyvesant Handicap (gr. II) and ran second to champion Easy Goer in that year’s Woodward Handicap (gr. I).

“Mr. Vogel had a knack for breeding to stallions in their third or fourth years after their stud fees had been reduced and getting positive results,” said Bill Landes, farm manager of Hermitage Farm near Goshen, Ky. “He was a client of Hermitage for close to 40 years. He rarely bought horses; most of them were homebreds.”

Vogel fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
