Churchill Downs has unveiled the official logo for the 128th running of America's greatest race, the Kentucky Derby. The logo for the famed "Run for the Roses," to be held May 4, 2002, blends classic Thoroughbred imagery with contemporary graphic design elements.

The primary focus of the logo, created by JettSport, Inc., is a classic 19th century adaptation of a horse and jockey as the Thoroughbred strides over a banner that proclaims the 128th Kentucky Derby. A stylized version of the famed Twin Spires, which serves as the track's official logo, is discreetly placed as a backdrop in the official Derby image.

The logo will serve as the centerpiece for the Kentucky Derby merchandising program headed by All Pro Championships, Incorporated, the official licenser of Kentucky Derby products. Over 200 different souvenir and collectible items will bear the Kentucky Derby 128 logo, ranging from traditional mint julep glasses to an expanded line of women and children's wear. The logo will also appear on several unique items such as an official Kentucky Derby wine, a bobble head doll of track mascot Churchill Charlie, woven blankets, birdhouses, candles, and an inflatable three-foot tall Mint Julep Glass.

Officially licensed products featuring the Kentucky Derby 128 logo are expected to produce over $8 million in retail sales to area merchants.

The 2002 Kentucky Derby image marks the first year that Jettsport, Inc. a Louisville-based sport and event graphics company, has designed the official Kentucky Derby logo. The company recently agreed on a three-year contract with Churchill Downs to serve as the official licensee for the popular "Art of the Kentucky Derby" series and other Churchill Downs artwork.
