Candrea, Citizen Advocate Top Delta Princess
The one-mile Princess, with a 3:43 p.m. CST post, is one race prior to the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (gr. III) for 2-year-old males. An 11-race program worth $2.2 million has been carded at Delta Downs on Saturday.
Citizen Advocate won the Oct. 22 listed My Trusty Cat Stakes, which is the local prep for the Princess. The daughter of Proud Citizen took the field wire-to-wire to score by a length going seven furlongs. She is unbeaten since breaking her maiden July 31 on the Calder main track, and also has victories on the Calder turf course and the Presque Isle Downs Tapeta.
Back on July 10, Citizen Advocate was claimed by trainer David Vivian on behalf of While Hall Lane for $40,000 prior to crossing the finish line first but being disqualified for interference at the start of a maiden race at Calder. She has remained at Delta Downs since her My Trusty Cat score, breezing five furlongs in 1:03 1/5 on Nov. 12.
Luis Jurado will keep the mount on the chestnut filly, who was bred in Florida by Peter Vegso Racing Stable and is out of the Horse Chestnut mare Twilight Service.
Another top contender is Candrea, who ships in from California for trainer Bob Baffert, and owners Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman. The daughter of Trippi exits a disappointing 11th-place effort in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs. She was sent back to Santa Anita after the race, where she turned in a quick three-furlong breeze in :35 2/5 Nov. 14.
Candrea won the first two starts of her career, including the Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex, then was runner-up in the grade I Oak Leaf Oct. 2. She will add blinkers for the Princess and be ridden by Martin Garcia once again.
Undefeated in four starts and having led at every call is Now I Know, co-owned and trained by Don Von Hemel. Based at Remington Park, the Pure Prize filly has made all four of her starts there, including the Oct. 28 Oklahoma Classics Lassie for state breds. She rolled to a no-doubt-about-it 9 1/4-length score in that race, which was at six furlongs.
Other contenders who won in their last starts are Delightful Magic, Inny Minnie, Yeardley, and Yvete Sangalo.
Delightful Magic ships in from Churchill Downs for Mark Casse where she broke her maiden by 7 1/2 lengths in her fifth try; Inny Minnie earned her first career victory at Keeneland on Oct 8; Yeardley was a convincing winner of the Miss Indiana Stakes at Hoosier Park; and Mexican-bred Yvete Sangalo enters off a black-type triumph at Remington Park.
