Zaftig, winner of the 2008 Acorn Stakes (gr. I) and in foal to Candy Ride , brought $1.4 million and became the highest-priced horse sold so far during the Fasig-Tipton November select mixed sale. Brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, who bred and raced the great Goldikova, purchased her Nov. 6 in Lexington late in the afternoon.
John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, consigned Zaftig. The 6-year-old daughter of Gone West also captured the Nassau County Stakes (gr. III) and finished third in the Sentient Flight Group Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in 2008.
Zaftig produced an A.P. Indy filly in 2010 and was barren for 2011.
“She’ll be a nice broodmare and her family is live in Europe,” said Pierre-Yves Bureau, who manages the Wertheimers’ horse operation. “The family is live in Europe, so that’s nice.”
Zip Top (by Smart Strike ), a 2-year-old out of Zaftig’s winning half sister Zofzig (by Danzig), finished second in this year’s Racing Post Trophy (Eng-I) and third in the Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Eng-III).
Zaftig and Zofzig are out of grade I winner Zoftig (by Cozzene).
