Squirtle Squirt wins the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
After going winless with 38 previous Breeders' Cup starters, trainer Bobby Frankel finally broke his maiden when Squirtle Squirt spurted through in the stretch to win the Sprint. Ridden by Alex Solis, the 3-year-old son of Marquetry owned by David J. Lanzman defeated Xtra Heat by a half length, with Caller One third in the 14-horse field.
Kona Gold, the defending sprint champion and winner of this race last year, ran seventh.
Xtra Heat zipped to the lead at the break, while being stalked by Caller One and Squirtle Squirt. With Xtra Heat putting up fractions of :22 3/5 and :46 2/5, the winner completed the six furlong distance in a quick 1:08 2/5. Artax holds the Belmont Park track record of 1:07 3/5.
"He laid third and I didn't have much choice but to go on today," said winning jockey Jerry Bailey. "I just got outrun (out of the gate). I didn't want the lead and I certainly couldn't grab him and take a hold. It wouldn't have been good for him. I was hoping he would relax if they outran him, and he did. Then he punched it in pretty good."
"I really thought someone from behind would win this race," Frankel said. "This was my fourth choice to win a Breeders' Cup race. I thought I'd win one with You and Aptitude and he was my fourth horse. You can never figure it out. I thought the inside was going to bury him. I thought the speed was going to bury him but it just worked out good.
Squirtle Squirt paid $21.20, $10.60, and $9.20. Xtra Hat paid $16.20 and $13.20, with Caller One worth $10.00. Swept Overboard finished fourth, followed by Left Bank, Delaware Township, Kona Gold, Five Star Day, Peeping Tom, Alannan, Mozart, El Corredor, Bet on Sunshine, and Hook and Ladder.
For Squirtle Squire, the victory was his eighth win in 14 starts, with three seconds. Previous to the Sprint, Squirtle Squirt had won the grade I King's Bishop and finished second in the Vosburgh.Sprint Chart, From EquibaseBreeders' Cup Sprint notes from the Breeders' Cup site
