Believe You Can, on a three-race winning winning streak for trainer Larry Jones, is likely the horse to beat in the $150,000 Pocahontas Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-old fillies on opening day of the Churchill Downs 21-day fall meet Oct. 30..

This will be the first start over the Churchill main track for Brereton C. Jones' homebred daughter of Proud Citizen  , one of three grade III winners in the field of 12 entered for the one-mile Pocahontas. The race, the 10th on Churchill's 11-race "Stars of Tomorrow" program, is one of two juvenile stakes on the card along with the $100,000 Iroquois (gr. III) also at one mile.

Following her fourth-place finish in her debut at Monmouth Park in June, Believe You Can has reeled off three consecutive triumphs. She will be stretching out from six furlongs, the distance of her last two wins. That includes a 2 1/2-length tally in the Tempted Stakes (gr. III) over a muddy Belmont Park main track Oct. 2.

In that race, Believe You Can defeated Georgie's Angel, who came up empty as the 13-10 favorite after stalking the leaders into the stretch. She finished third, beaten by 6 1/2 lengths.

Georgie's Angel, trained by Todd Pletcher for a partnership headed by Louisville attorney Ronnie Sheffer, won the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) at Saratoga July 22. She was subsequently fourth in Saratoga's Spinaway (gr. I) when stuck on the inside while fighting the pace. The Bellamy Road   lass broke her maiden in an impressive first-out effort at Churchill by 6 1/4 lengths July 4.

The other graded winner in the Pocahontas lineup is Barry King’s Flashy Lassie, 17-1 winner of the Debutante Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill in June. Trained by Garry Simms, Flashy Lassie ran second in the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies next. In her most recent start, the Flashy Bull offspring finished 12th over Polytrack at Keeneland in the Darley Alcibiades (gr. I) Oct. 7.

Heart of Destiny was second in the Alcibiades, finishing 1 1/2 lengths behind Stephanie's Kitten in her first start against winners. Stephanie's Kitten is pre-entered in both the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IIT) and the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvneile Fillies (gr. I).

A homebred daughter of Lion Heart owned by Hurstland Farm and James H. Greene Jr. and trained by James Baker, Heart of Destiny broke her maiden by a nose going 1 1/16 miles on truf at Saratoga Sept. 4.

Others exiting the Alcibiades are pacesetting On Fire Baby, who finished fifth at 40-1, and And Why Not, who had excuses while struggling home sixth.

Sure to attract attention is James C. Spence's homebred Aubby K, a flashy 15 1/2-length first-out maiden winner over four rivals at Belmont Sept. 10. The daughter of Street Sense   out of Spence's graded stakes-winning mare Lilly Capote is expected to have little trouble with the stretch-out from 5 1/2 furlongs.

“You gotta like the way she won the first one,” trainer Ralph Nicks said.
