Red Gulch Leads the Way at Tattersalls Opener

Red Gulch commanded the top price on the opening day of the Tattersalls autumn horses in training sale, bringing 250,000 guineas ($418,514 in U.S. funds) Oct. 24 in England. Anthony Stroud purchased the 4-year-old bay gelding from Ed Walker Racing.

“Ed Walker has done a great job with this horse,” Stroud said. “The horse looked magnificent. He moves well, got maximum marks from us, and he suits the profile for Dubai. There is still some progression in him.”

Walker trained Red Gulch, who captured the Prix du Ranelagh Oct. 11 in France. A son of Kyllachy out of the Lear Fan mare Enrapture, Red Gulch has won five of his 19 career races and has earned $125,789.

The results for the first session included a gross of 3,855,700 guineas ($6,147,300) for the 224 horses that were sold. The average price was 17,213 guineas ($27,443), and the median price was 9,250 guineas ($14,748).

Compared with last year, the number sold was the same but the gross decreased 13%. The average fell 12.7%, while the median rose 5.7%. The clearance rate was 79.4% compared with 76% in 2010.
