Castro in Stable Condition After Spill

Jockey Eddie Castro was conscious, in stable condition, and able to move his extremities following a spill in the fourth race at Belmont Park Oct. 15. He was transported to North Shore University Hospital, where X-rays on his neck were negative, according to the New York Racing Association jockey advocate. He will remain in the hospital overnight to undergo further testing.

In the race, a 7 1/2-furlong dirt allowance, Castro was aboard Royal Brush, who broke down in the middle of the stretch.

Heading into the Oct. 15 card, Castro, 26, was tied for 10th in the Belmont fall meet jockey standings with nine wins. The native of Panama is the regular rider for TVG Coaching Club American Oaks winner (gr. I) It's Tricky, expected to be one of the favorites in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic (gr. I) Nov.  4 at Churchill Downs.

Royal Brush, a 3-year-old son of Royal Academy trained by Matthew Peebles, suffered a fractured left front cannon bone and was euthanized.
