Wagering Improves at Arlington Park

Average daily all-sources handle on Arlington Park’s 2011 live racing that ended Sept. 25 was up 3% over 2010, but still remained significantly lower than 2009 figures.
Overall, Arlington averaged $3,007,493 per day in all-sources wagering over 85 days of racing, according to figures submitted by the track to the Illinois Racing Board. Arlington Park and other tracks owned by Churchill Downs, Inc., do not report wagering and attendance figures, except for major events.
In 2010, Arlington averaged $2,907,844 in handle over 91 days and in 2009 it was $4,003,711 for a 98-day meet.
For 2011, on-track handle on live racing declined 3%, off-track wagering on Arlington races was up 3%, and advance-deposit wagering on Arlington races was up 9% to $61,785. Out-of-state wagering on Arlington races increased 5%.
While the average handle on live racing was up 3% year-to-year, the all-Illinois handle on simulcast races during the Arlington meeting declined 9%, including a 13% decline on-track.
Arlington did not comment on the numbers.
According to The Jockey Club Information Systems, average daily purses increased 4.5% to $246,111 and average runners per race increased from 7.87 in 2010 to 8.34 this year.
