Robert Cole Jr.’s Rapid Redux, who has won his last 17 starts, is entered Sept. 30 in another starter allowance event at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort in West Virginia.
Rapid Redux, a 5-year-old gelding by Pleasantly Perfect , is two victories away from tying the North American record for consecutive wins held by Zenyatta and Peppers Pride, both mares. He last raced Sept. 16 in a similar starter allowance event at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, also in West Virginia.
A field of eight was entered in the $14,900, one-mile starter allowance for horses that have started for a claiming price of $5,000 or less in 2010-11. Cole claimed Rapid Redux last year for $6,250 but he has run for $5,000 during the time period.
Post time for the eighth race at Mountaineer is 9:55 p.m. EDT. Deshawn Parker is named to ride Rapid Redux, who has won at Mountaineer this year.
Cole and trainer David Wells have said the gelding thrives on regular racing, and that they plan to keep him in starter allowance company through the end of this year, when his eligibility for starter $5,000 races will expire.
“We tend to like the lesser known tracks–Thistledown, Charles Town, Mountaineer, Penn National–we like to run where somebody from New York or Philly might not run,” Cole said. “It has worked well so far.”
Charles Town has scheduled a starter $5,000 with a $25,000 purse for Oct. 14. Laurel Park, where Cole regularly races, has similar races in the pipeline.
