Royal Currier Sets Track Mark in Gallant Bob

Royal Currier streaks home in the Gallant Bob.

Royal Currier, sent off at odds of nearly 19-1, clocked a track record for six furlongs at Philadelphia's Parx Racing Sept. 24 while winning the $250,000 Gallant Bob Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths (VIDEO) .

The 3-year-old son of Red Bullet was timed in 1:07.51 on the lightening quick track, breaking the mark of Indian Way set in May 2009 that is listed as 1:07 3/5. The track, which was sealed earlier, had been listed as muddy at the start of the day.

Trained by Patricia Farro for MAT Stables, Royal Currier took the lead midway up the backstretch for jockey Stewart Elliott and led at every call while running the opening quarter-mile in a flashy :21.59 and four furlongs in :43.43. 

Royal Currier drew away on the turn and opened up by four lengths at mid-stretch. He was fully extended to the wire while holding sway over 3-2 favorite Poseidon's Warrior  , ridden by Frankie Pennington. Second choice Indiano finished a half-length farther back in third with Luis Saez aboard.

The Gallant Bob immediately preceded the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) at Parx Racing, the former Philadelphia Park.

Royal Currier paid $39.80, $11.60, $4.60 for his runaway victory and teamed with Poseidon's Warrior ($3.60, $2.40) for a $104.40 exacta. Indiano was $2.20 to show in the field of seven.

This was the fourth black-type win for Royal Currier, who was bred in Florida by Adena Springs. The bay gelding is out of the Lite the Fuse mare Top of the League.

Royal Currier owns a 7-4-1 record in 16 starts with earnings of $395,850. In his most recent start, the 5 1/2-furlong Gilded Times Stakes at Monmouth Park Sept. 4, Royal Currier failed to finish after rearing at the start and being eased. His most recent victory came in Monmouth's Anderson Fowler Stakes June 19.

Wine Police finished a distant fourth, followed by He's Speightful, Biddy, and Deputy Fling.
