Following strong ratings numbers for its initial series of races from Saratoga, NBC Sports announced Sept. 21 it has signed a two-year extension with the New York Racing Association to continue televising weekend racing from the historic racetrack in upstate New York.
A tentative 2012 schedule includes four weekend days of racing in August as well as a program on Sat., Sept. 1. The races will air either on NBC or NBC Sports Network, which is the new name NBC will roll out for the VERSUS channel beginning the first of next year.
This summer the NBC Sports family of channels beamed to viewers Havre de Grace’s victory in the Woodward (gr. I), Tizway taking the Whitney (gr. I), and Stay Thirsty sweeping the Jim Dandy (gr. II) and Travers (gr. I) stakes. It included seven weekends of coverage.
“NBC Sports’ coverage of this summer’s Saratoga meet was phenomenal,” said NYRA president and CEO Charles Hayward in a statement. “We are very excited to extend this partnership for at least two more years and are already looking forward to the 2012 meet.”
Added Jon Miller, president of programming for NBC Sports and VERSUS, “Saratoga is one of the iconic venues in American sports, and we couldn’t be happier with the multi-platform success we shared in the first year of this partnership.”
