Del Mar Attendance, Handle Down Slightly

Del Mar saw decreases in attendance and handle figures for its 37-day 2011 meeting, which ended Sept. 7.

A total of 660,245 patrons passed through the turnstiles this year, .3% less than the 662,521 who attended in 2010. Daily attendance averaged 17,844 in 2011 compared to 17,906 a year ago.
All sources handle slid 4.2%, from a daily average of $12,133,302 in 2010 to $11,628,660 this season. A total of $430,260,422 was wagered in 2011 compared to $448,932,160 in 2010. On-track handle decreased 1.5% this year, from a daily average of $2,117,909 to $2,087,141.
In-state wagering, which includes Northern California and advance deposit wagering numbers, fell 5.2%, while out-of-state commingled wagers, including ADW, fell 4.6%.
Opening day, July 20, saw an attendance record set when 46,588 fans turned out to the seaside oval just north of San Diego, Calif.
