Unbridled Elaine, who was returned to trainer Dallas Stewart on Saturday after being conditioned by David Vance since June, worked five furlongs at Churchill Downs Sunday in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I). The fastest work at the distance Sunday, though, was turned in by Vance-trained Caressing, who won last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I).
Unbridled Elaine breezed five furlongs in 1:01 1/5 on the fast main track.
"She looked good," said Stewart. "Everything's good."
The granddaughter of the recently deceased Unbridled finished fourth in her most recent start, Keeneland's Overbrook Spinster Stakes (gr. I). Prior to that, the 3-year-old filly finished second to Classic contender Macho Uno.
"She's a super nice filly and you wouldn't think twice about taking her back," Stewart said Saturday. "I was hurt when she left and I'm glad to have her back. I wished them luck when they left and I now I hope I have some luck with her."
Carl Pollard's Caressing drilled five panels in :59 2/5 while breezing. Her most recent win came in the Singapore Plate Stakes (gr. III) at Arlington Park in August. Last year's champion juvenile filly has won two of six starts as a sophomore, both grade III events. Caressing is not pre-entered in a Breeders' Cup race this year. Instead, the daughter of Honour and Glory will likely start in the Nov. 3 Churchill Downs Distaff (gr. II) and the Nov. 22 Falls City Handicap (gr. III).
Solvig breezed five furlongs in 1:00 ahead of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. I). The Carl Nafzger trainee galloped out six furlongs in 1:13 with exercise rider Tracy Wilkes in the irons.
"I just know that she's a racehorse and she runs hard and that's all that matters to me," said Nafzger. "When you run in the Breeders' Cup, you're running against the best fillies in the world and that's tough. But when you get to the Breeders' Cup, it's supposed to be tough."
Scheduled to work Monday are the Ken McPeek-trained pair of Take Charge Lady (Juvenile Fillies) and Repent (Juvenile). Morton Fink's Niall O'Callaghan-trained Guided Tour (Classic) is scheduled to work Tuesday under jockey Larry Melancon, who will be aboard in the Classic as well.
