Cozzy Corner, Chausson Poire Win Valley View Stakes in Dead Heat

Cozzy Corner and Chausson Poire -- the 7- and 6-1 fourth and third choices, respectively, in the ten-horse field –- finished in a dead heat to win the $113,600 Valley View Stakes at Keeneland Saturday.

In a blanket finish for the top spot, Quick Tip came home a neck behind the top pair and three lengths clear of La Recherche. Coney Kitty finished fifth, followed by Twilite Tryst, Libretto, Sluice, Peace Keeping, and Sky Alliance, who set the early pace before tiring.

Cozzy Corner, (Cozzene--The Bink, by Seeking the Gold) and Chausson Poire (Northern Spur--Turn Native, by Raise a Native) completed the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies in 1:42.93 on a firm turf course at the Kentucky track. Lonnie Meche rode Cozzy Corner; Russell Woolsey was aboard Chausson Poire.

"She was playing with me a bit, pricking her ears, not giving me a hundred percent" said Meche of Cozzy Corner, who held a clear lead in the stretch. "But, we were able to hang on and get the dead heat which we're satisfied with."

Patrick Kelly trains Cozzy Corner for owner/breeder Fox Ridge Farm Inc., while Chausson Poire runs under the colors of Pia M. Kirkham while conditioned by Duane Knipe. The latter was bred in Kentucky by Angus MacLean and Michael Simpson.

Cozzy Corner paid $7.80, $7.40, and $5.60. Chausson Poire returned $7, $7.60, and $5.20. Quick Tip was worth $5 to show. The 2-3 exacta, with Cozzy Corner on top, returned $53.40, with the reverse paying $51. (Chart, Equibase)
