Atlantic Hurricane and Emile Ramsammy take the Seaway at Woodbine.

Atlantic Hurricane came out on top in a stretch battle with 2-5 favorite Embur's Song to win the $162,500 Seaway Stakes (Can-III) for older fillies and mares Sept. 3 at Woodbine. The 4-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Halo's Image covered seven furlongs of Polytrack in 1:21.88 (VIDEO) in winning her fourth consecutive race.

Ridden by Emile Ramsammy, Atlantic Hurricane led throughout, carving out fractions of :22.85 and :46.14 while battling with Embur’s Song and Patrick Husbands. It was several lengths back to the rest of the field throughout the race. The two dueled through the stretch with Atlantic Hurricane  prevailing by three-quarters of a length under a hand ride. The final eighth was negotiated in a solid :12.23.

"I didn't want to be out front like I did, but she was sharp and aggressive," Ramsammy said. "I guess it's hurricane season and she was blowing away."

It was 5 ½ lengths back to Rashnaa in third, who was followed by Amiable Grace, Live and Love, Valli With a Vow, and Trip Mom. The winner returned $11.50, $3.60, and $2.90. Favored Embur’s Song paid $2.20 and $2.10 and Rashnaa paid $4.30 to show. The 9-8 exacta paid $23.

The winner was claimed by trainer Stuart Simon for B. and R. McLellan, C. Hollick, and Simon, for $40,000 after a seven-furlong race at Woodbine June 1. Since then, the filly won back-to-back allowance races prior to the Seaway.

"We just thought that she looked like she could be handy on the turf especially," said Simon about the claim. “ Quite a few of those Florida turf horses seem to be doing well here, and we thought maybe if she would mature on she could work out to be a good horse. She's a high-strung filly. She's got a bit of an edge to her, but those good ones have that."

Bred in Florida by Joseph J. and Thomas J. DiGrazia, the Seaway winner is out of the Stormy Atlantic   mare It’s the Cats Meow.

Stewards scratched Comic Marvel and Dance to the Moon.
