Preston Stables’ Flat Out blew out three furlongs in :37.13 on the main track at Saratoga Sept. 2, the morning before his big start in Saturday’s $750,000 Woodward Stakes (gr. I).

“He was galloping and we wanted to blow him out a bit, and the clockers caught him and timed it,” said trainer Charles “Scooter” Dickey. “It turned out well, and he cooled out fine. It wasn’t too much.”

The work was the fourth fastest of six working at the distance.

Winner of the July 2 Suburban Handicap (gr. II) at Belmont Park, Flat Out enters the Woodward off a second-place finish behind Tizway in the nine-furlong Whitney Invitational Handicap (gr. I) Aug. 6. The son of Flatter—Cresta Lil, by Cresta Rider, was made the 5-2 morning-line second choice in the Woodward behind the filly Havre de Grace, who was tabbed as the 8-5 favorite.

Flat Out, who was bred in Kentucky by Nikolaus Bock, has a 4-2-0 slate from 10 starts and has earned $509,713.
