Jungle Wave Tries for Another Play the King

Jungle Wave, who won the 2009 Play the King Stakes (Can-IIT) at Woodbine and finished second in last year’s running, returns for another go around in the seven-furlong turf sprint Sunday, Aug. 28. The son of Hold Your Tiger owned by Tucci Stables will be trying for his first triumph since his 2009 Play the King score.

The $200,000 Play the King, which drew a field of 12, is for 3 years and up and is the eighth race on the card. Post time is 4:37 p.m. EDT.

Jungle Wave, who has made his last 19 starts at Woodbine, has finished second or third in four of five starts this year. In his last start on Aug. 6, he led by two lengths at the eighth-pole before weakening and finishing second, beaten a nose. He will be ridden for the first time by Jesse Campbell.

Three members of the field—Great Mills, Havelock, and Stormy Lord—are coming off stakes wins on the grass and two of them—Great Mills and Havelock—will be making their first start north of the border. Great Mills, a son of War Front   raced by Millennium Farms, prevailed by a nose in the Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga July 28. Earlier in the year he won the Grindstone Stakes on grass at Fair Grounds and ran second in the Transylvania Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland.

Silverton Hill’s Havelock enters off a tight score in the Arlington Sprint Handicap July 16 in which he prevailed by a neck. The son of Great Notion   sports an earlier grass score at Keeneland this year and a placing in the Hanshin Cup Handicap (gr. III) over Arlington’s main track in May.

Stormy Lord, another Woodbine regular, has won two of his three starts this year including the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes in mid-July for owners Hat Trick Stable and Kinghaven Farms. The son of Stormy Atlantic   began the year with a triumph in the Connaught Cup Stakes (Can-IIT).

Canadian grade II winner Court of the Realm, owned by Aurora Meadows and Oxbridge Farm, is looking to rebound after finishing sixth in the Seagram Cup (Can-III) over Woodbine’s main track Aug. 6 for his first loss since last September. The son of Powerscourt had strung together five straight wins before the Seagram Cup, including a score in the King Edward Stakes (Can-IIT) in June.

The most accomplished runner is Bear Stables’ Fatal Bullet, a millionaire who sports five stakes wins and a runner-up effort in the 2008 Sentient Flight Group Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I). The son of Red Bullet will be making his first start on the turf since finishing third in last year’s Nearctic Stakes (Can-IT) at Woodbine. Fatal Bullet won an optional claimer at Woodbine two races back and finished fifth in the Bold Venture in July in his last start.

The Play the King also attracted the second- and third-place finishers in the Bold Venture. Signature Red, a son of Bernstein raced by Norseman Racing Stable, finished second in the race after winning the Highlander Stakes (Can-IIT) for the second straight year. Riding the River finished third in the Bold Venture for Dominion Bloodstock, D. Ball, and HGHR. The son of Wiseman's Ferry   started the year with two consecutive scores before finishing a solid fourth in the Highlander Stakes (Can-IIT) in June.
