Churchill Downs to Increase Security at Fall Meet

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the current situation in the United States, Churchill Downs will implement new security measures for its 24-day fall meet that begins Oct. 28.

The new security measures will be in place on Oct. 27, when the track will be open for simulcast wagering on the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Belmont Park and races from Keeneland and Arlington Park.

Uniformed police officers will be stationed at the track's three primary entrance points. In addition, fans are prohibited from bringing coolers, backpacks, chairs, luggage, and duffel bags onto the premises. All other carry-in items are subject to search, though those items will not necessarily be inspected.

Churchill Downs also will install extra surveillance cameras at its primary entrance gates and other gates located along 9th Street at the rear of the facility.

"Our security policies at Churchill Downs are under constant review, but recent events have prompted us to take an even closer look at those procedures," Churchill president Alex Waldrop said in a prepared statement. "Our fans may have to deal with some inconveniences because of these new measures, but we believe they will appreciate our efforts to improve their safety, security and comfort during their visit to our track."
