Earl Of Tinsdal took the lead from the start and never looked back as he cruised to an easy four-length victory in the Rheinland-Pokal (Ger-I) at Cologne Aug. 14.
The 3-year-old son of champion Black Sam Bellamy entered the Rheinland-Pokal off a second-place finish in the Deutsches Derby (Ger-I) in his most recent start. As a result, he was sent off as the 9-10 betting favorite. Godolphin’s Cavalryman was made the 7-2 second-choice in the field of six. The dark bay horse was seeking to emulate his stablemate Campanologist, who captured this race last year.
Earl Of Tinsdal broke alertly under jockey Eduardo Pedroza and went straight to the front. The bay colt set a steady pace as he led the field through the early stages of the 12-furlong contest. Cavalryman, piloted by Frankie Dettori, sat about a length behind him in second, with Silvaner just off his flank in third.
The order remained the same throughout the first mile of the race. As the horses entered the home straight, Pedroza shook up Earl Of Tinsdal and the colt spurted away from the rest of the field. Earl Of Tinsdal continued to draw off in the final furlongs, crossing the wire an easy winner despite racing a bit greenly.
Saltas closed strongly but was no match for the winner and had to settle for second, finishing 3 1/2 lengths in front of Silvaner. Cavalryman, after briefly threatening in the stretch, faded badly to finish last.
Final time for the 12 furlongs was 2:35.29 over the soft going.
Andreas Wohler, who trains Earl Of Tinsdal for Sunrace Stables, was delighted with his colt’s performance, telling reporters, “He has improved since the Derby and is even now still a big baby. We saw from the way he wandered in the straight that he is still very green--he was probably feeling lonely in front.”
“We will probably give him one more race this season, possibly in the Preis von Europa (Ger-I) here in Cologne and I’m sure he is going to be a really smart 4-year-old,” Wohler added.
Earl Of Tinsdal was bred in Germany by Hannes K. Gutschow. He is out of the winning Dashing Blade mare, Earthly Paradise.
