Mucho Macho Man, third-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), breezed three furlongs over Saratoga’s Oklahoma training track in :35.35 the morning of Aug. 12.
The work, with exercise rider Herberto Pugar aboard, was the quickest of six at the distance and the colt’s first workout since his seventh-place finish in the June 11 Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
“We wanted him to work easily,” said Kathy Ritvo, who trains the son of Macho Uno for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team One Racing Stable. “He went quickly, but he went well. We let him do it on his own. We’re putting a foundation under him, getting him ready for the races again.”
Ritvo said she has no long-range target for Mucho Macho Man, who competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown.
“The important thing is he went out with a great attitude,” said Ritvo. “He’s nice and sound and happy.”
The son of Macho Uno has won or placed in seven of 11 starts and earned $610,643. Included in his two wins is a victory in this year’s Risen Star Stakes (gr. II). He also finished second in the Nashua and Remsen, both grade II, as a 2-year-old of 2010 and third in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II).
