Old Friends announced Aug. 4 that Prized, the 1989 Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) winner and sire of Brass Hat, has joined their Thoroughbred retirement center.

Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends in Georgetown, Ky., said the 25-year-old horse by Kris S—My Turbulent Miss, by My Dad George, arrived at the farm in excellent condition from Randy and John Funkhouser’s O’Sullivan Farms near Charles Town, W.V.
Bred by Florida’s Meadowbrook Farm, which campaigned him along with Clover Racing Stables and trainer Neil Drysdale, Prized won stakes on both the dirt and turf while totaling career earnings of $2,262,555.
As a 3-year-old Prized won the Molson Export Million at Woodbine and the Swaps Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park where he upset two-time classic winner Sunday Silence. Later that year the dark bay won the Breeders’ Cup Turf, which was his first start on grass.
At 4, Prized continued his success with victories in the San Luis Rey (gr. IT) and the Arcadia Handicap (gr. IIIT) on the Santa Anita turf.
Retired to stud duty in 1991, Prized is the sire of multiple stakes winner Brass Hat and dual Auckland Cup winner Prize Lady.
“He looks great and he loves to talk,” said Blowen. “He’s already out in his new paddock welcoming visitors. We’re very grateful that his connections honored us with this gift.”
