John Deere has been renewed as a marketing partner and official equipment supplier of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and will launch the John Deere Award, a competition among breeders of horses participating in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series and World Championships.
The World Championships, with 15 races worth $26 million, will be held Nov. 4-5 at Churchill Downs.
John Deere, which became associated with Breeders’ Cup in 2002, said it wants to recognize breeders’ contributions to the World Championships. The John Deere Award will recognize the breeder receiving the highest number of first-place finishes in 68 international Challenge series races and the 15 races in the World Championships.
Breeders’ Cup will use a point system to track the progress of breeders during the 2011 Challenge and Championships season. The point system for winning a Challenge/Championships stakes for U.S and Canadian graded events and international group events is: 10 points for grade or group I wins; six for grade or group II wins; four for grade or group III wins; and two for races not graded.
For entries with multiple breeders, points will be distributed evenly between each breeder. If a race finishes in a dead heat, points will be distributed evenly between the two winning breeder.
NTRA Advantage and John Deere will provide a John Deere TS Gator utility vehicle to the winning breeder at the World Championships.
“This new award is a great way to recognize and promote the essential importance of our breeders to the Breeders’ Cup program throughout the summer and fall leading to the Championships,” Carter Carnegie, Breeders’ Cup senior vice president of sponsorship sales and business development, said in a July 21 statement.
