Monmouth Park officials said July 14 they’re expecting a field of at least eight for the $1 million Haskell Invitational (gr. I) set for July 31 at the New Jersey racetrack.
Racing secretary Mike Dempsey said Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Shackleford is among the probable starters for the Haskell, which is run at 1 1/8 miles, as is Rattlesnake Bridge, who won the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth July 9.
Trainer Kelly Breen, who is based at Monmouth, has two under consideration for the Haskell: Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Ruler On Ice and Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner Pants on Fire.
Trainer Bob Baffert is considering Coil and Iowa Derby (gr. III) winner Prayer for Relief.
Others expected for the Haskell are Concealed Identity, second to Pants on Fire in the Pegasus Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth; Astrology, who was third in the Preakness; and J J's Lucky Train, who was second in the Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II).
