A Harlan's Holiday colt out of the Dixieland Band mare Shiny Band was purchased by Patrice Miller of EQB for $225,000 during the July 12 Fasig-Tipton July yearling sale in Lexington.
The price for the colt, consigned by Gainesway as agent, was the highest so far at the one-day sale. Miller declined to say who the colt was purchased on behalf of. Agent John Moynihan was the underbidder.
Bred in Louisiana by Barney Core and Regina Bourgeois-Core, the colt had been purchased at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton November sale for $35,000 by Bethel Ridge Stable. His dam, Shiny Band, won the grade III Shuvee Handicap at Belmont Park and is a half-sister to millionaire grade I winner Shine Again.
Just prior to the Harlan’s Holiday colt, which was Hip No. 103, a colt by Tapit was purchased by Arc Bloodstock, agent for Earle I. Mack for $200,000. The only Tapit colt in the sale, the yearling was consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
He is from the immediate female family of grade I winner Sky Mesa and European group II winner Della Francesca.
Aaron Cohen, who signed the ticket, said Mack and his advisers targeted the colt for purchase. “He is a gorgeous looking colt. He looks a lot like Storm Cat. He ticked all the boxes,” said Cohen, borrowing from the oft-used term by buyers at public auctions.
