Texas-Bred Lil Cherokee Tries Bashford Manor
Texas-bred Lil Cherokee, undefeated in two starts at Lone Star Park, leads a field of 11 in the $100,000 Bashford Manor (gr. III) for 2-year-olds July 2 at Churchill Downs. It is the first graded race for juvenile males this season.
A homebred for Ed Few, Lil Cherokee will share top weight of 120 pounds with Hot Speed in the six-furlong Bashford Manor, which highlights Churchill’s 13-race Saturday program. Post time is slated for 6:23 p.m. EDT.
Lil Cherokee, a son of Cherokee Run—Western Lil, by Western Trick, broke his maiden by 3 1/2 lengths May 12 at Lone Star and came back to take the TTA Sales Futurity in front-running fashion as the odds-on choice June 11. Miguel Mena, who won this event in 2009 with Backtalk, will have the mount this time.
Trainer Bret Calhoun shipped in undefeated 2-year-old filly Shocktime from Texas to run in the Debutante (gr. III) last weekend at Churchill off her win in the TTA Sales Futurity but she wound up finishing last as the second choice.
Florida-bred Hot Speed romped by four lengths in a $25,000 maiden claimer May 28 at Calder in his second start. The son of Burning Roma is trained and co-owned by David Fawkes, who ships the colt in from Delaware Park.
Tom Amoss, Churchill’s second leading trainer and a two-time winner of the event, will be represented by Sum of the Parts, a Speightstown colt who broke his maiden in his May 14 debut at Churchill by 2 3/4 lengths as the 7-5 favorite. A $150,000 purchase at the Barretts Equine Limited March 2011 sale of 2-year-olds in training, Sum of the Parts has had a series of solid works at Churchill leading up to this race. Leandro Goncalves will have the ride.
“He’s a horse we’re very excited about,” Amoss said. “I thought his race was really good, and the horse that ran second to him, Exfactor, won his next race. Exfactor won a split (maiden) race and he ran a lot faster than the other division, so that was encouraging.”
Another good-looking maiden winner making his stakes debut is Green Mouse, co-owned and trained by Bill Denzik Jr. Green Mouse, by Cherokee Run, scored by 3 1/2 lengths in a May 25 maiden special weight at Churchill going five furlongs in the slop.
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who saddled the Bashford Manor winner a record five times, will send out Chalybeate Springs, a maiden who finished fifth in his June 18 debut.
