Quiet American Colt Sells For $105,000 At Keeneland

A $105,000 Quiet American colt was the top seller as of 2 p.m. (EDT) Monday during the first session of the Keeneland October yearling sale. Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent, he was purchased by Florida pinhooker Becky Thomas, who plans to resell him at an auction of 2-year-olds in training next year.

"I thought he was at the top end of this sale," Thomas said. "He is very attractive. Not many of the Quiet Americans are as pretty as he is. He's a big, 'stretchy' colt. We like to buy some horses that we think will go two turns, and he looks like he can get the job done."

The bay colt was produced from the 12-year-old Spectacular Bid mare Balancing Act. A winner, she is a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Peaks and Valleys (by Mt. Livermore).

A Wild Again -- Find Happiness colt, who is a half brother to Canadian champion Larkwhistle, was hammered down for $120,000, but he was bought back by his consignor, Charlton.

The October auction, which is a new sale for Keeneland, got off to a sluggish start. The first horse in the ring, a Senor Speedy colt, did not get a bid. Eighteen (14.4%) of the first 125 horses catalogued were withdrawn. Of the 107 that went through the ring, 56 were sold and 51 (47.7%) were bought back by their consignors.
