Blood-Horse Publications garnered 14 honors in the American Horse Publications annual awards program June 18 in San Diego, Calif.
The Horse: Your Guide To Equine Health Care (magazine) received the following honors:
Horse Care – Circulation 20,000 and Over
In this category, which had 19 entries, Dr. Stacy Oke, Dr. Nancy S. Loving, Heather Smith Thomas, and Christy West won first place with their stories in the “Body Systems Series,” appearing in January and February 2010.
Also in this category, Marie Rosenthal, MS; Dr. Martin K. Nielsen; and Liza Holland received honorable mention for their contributions to the May 2010 Parasite Series.
Personal Column – Circulation 20,000 and Over
Robert Laurence won second place in this category with his commentary, “Across the Fence: Whose Credit, Whose Blame?”
Artist Camille Weber captured second place for illustration in this category with her whimsical worms from May 2010’s “Parasite Perspectives: Thinking Outside The Box.”
TheHorse.com was recognized for the following honors:
Freelance writer Lisa Kemp’s “HERDA Awareness Series” took first place in the Online Service to the Reader class.
In the Online Equine-Related Blog class, which had 16 entries, Alayne Blickle’s “Smart Horse Keeping” won second place (posts entered were from Aug. 27, Sept. 30, and Dec. 29, 2010).
An honorable mention in this category went to Editor-in-Chief Stephanie L. Church’s blog, “Horse Sense (and Sensibility),” for her posts from May 14, Sept. 10, and Dec. 29, 2010.
In Online Equine-Related Video, a class with 11 entries, Digital Editor/Producer Christy West and Videographer Alex Cutadean (also responsible for post-production) won third place for “Pasture Weeds: Most Toxic To Horses.”
The Blood-Horse (magazine) won first place for Editorial Action Photograph for “Kentucky Derby 136 Super Saver,” shot by Courtney Bearse for the May 8, 2010, issue.
BloodHorse.com was recognized with the following awards:
“Hangin’ With Haskin” was honored for first place in the Equine-Related Blog category. Senior Correspondent Steve Haskin was commended for his “well-written and researched” posts of May 6, Sept. 12, and Nov. 11 that had “excellent photos to accompany text.”
In the Equine-Related Web site category, BloodHorse.com earned second place.
In the Online News Reporting: News Breaking Story class, which had 12 entries, Tom Precious’ articles on the subject “New York City Off-Track Betting” garnered second place.
The Blood-Horse Marketwatch won an Honorable Mention in the Event Coverage Editorial Content – Circulation under 20,000 category for Scot T. Gillies’ article “MarketWatch Broodmare of the Year–Reviewing The Top Dams of 2009.”
Keeneland Magazine received top honors for Editorial Design (circulation over 20,000) for “Hair Raising,” in the fall 2010 issue (editor: Jackie Duke; creative director: Suzanne Dorman; artists: Beth McCoy, Brian Turner, David Young).
