The host site for the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championships could be announced before the end of June or in early July, with Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, and Santa Anita Park the three finalists, according to Breeders’ Cup chairman Tom Ludt.

Ludt said June 18 that a committee headed by Gainesway Farm’s Antony Beck was working on selecting the location for the event, with a decision expected “within the next week or two.”

Churchill Downs, the historic home of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), is hosting the Breeders’ Cup races this year Nov. 4-5 for the second year in a row and a record eighth time. Santa Anita, which this year replaced its synthetic main racing surface with a conventional dirt surface, hosted the World Championships in consecutive years in 2008-09.

The New York Racing Association, which operates Belmont, made its presentation to Breeders’ Cup officials the week preceding the June 11 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Belmont last hosted the races in 2005.

On June 17 Breeders’ Cup announced the appointment of Craig Fravel, president and general manager of California’s Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, as the organization’s new president and chief executive officer. Del Mar had been in the public discussion as a possible future host site for the World Championships.
